About MHF Basset Hound Puppies...
We put tremendous effort into raising quality puppies and maintaining our adult bassets in excellent health. All of our dogs are kept fit and at a healthy weight. They see a licensed veterinarian for checkups and breeding soundness exams. Our breeding bassets undergo testing and evaluation PRIOR to mating. We pride ourselves on being one of the few Basset Hound breeders in North America that tests our breeding canines for both Basset Hound Canine Thrombopathia and Von Willebrand's Disease. Producing healthy puppies, above all else, is our primary concern.
Our puppies are raised in our home, as members of the family. We are not a kennel.
We can not accept visitors to our home until puppies are 8 weeks old. Although we love when families come to visit, we will expect children to interact with the puppies in a calm and gentle manner. Only adults will be allowed to handle the puppies. If tumultuous children threaten the safety of our puppies we will not release your reserved puppy to you and we will ask you to end your visit for the safety of our puppies. Your deposit will be refunded in the way it was received. We love our dogs and puppies. For us, their safety and well being will always come first.
We will always take a puppy back in if the owner can not properly care for it. We will not sell our puppies to puppy mills, pet stores, or irresponsible breeders. Our puppies are sold as pets on Limited AKC registration, WITH CONTRACT, and they are not to be used for breeding under any circumstance. If you take issue with this, please find a different breeder. Please do not be surprised or offended when we ask you questions about your plans and preparation for a new basset puppy. We may also ask for a veterinarian reference. This comes from our concern and commitment to match the right puppy to the right owner.
You should be incredibly wary of any breeder who doesn't ask questions or have some sort of structured adoption process. Whether you buy a puppy from MHF or elsewhere, we encourage you to do your research. PLEASE do not support back yard breeders or puppy mill operations. Pet stores typically have dogs from puppy mills because a store's only concern is turning a profit. Remember, a higher price tag does not necessarily reflect higher quality. Brokers will buy $200 pups, put a $1500 price on them, and then market them to gullible buyers. Never purchase a puppy online and have it shipped to you. If your breeder doesn't offer accompanied transportation, then you need to find one that does. Expect to have a client/breeder professional relationship that lasts far beyond the day you purchase your puppy.
We vaccinate and preemptively treat more than most breeders, because we've been mentored by several veterinarians. Their expertise has steered the care we provide..
Your puppy will be given a Bordetella vaccination (for kennel cough) before you pick it up. Kennel Cough is very contagious. Your puppy could come in contact with it at your vet's office, dog park, pet store, or hotel you stay at while traveling. We also preemptively treat for Coccidia before your puppy is picked up. Coccidia requires a different treatment from regular deworming and your puppy can pick up coccidia from the soil. These things are in addition to the our standard vaccinations (Distemper, Adenovirus, and Parvovirus) and deworming schedule which prevents heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms (intestinal parasites).
- We recognize and value the importance of our veterinarian in our breeding program. I have years of experience with this breed and other canines, and I am a para-veterinary worker, but I am not a veterinarian, and I don't attempt to fill that role. It is vital to have puppies examined by licensed veterinarian before releasing them to their new homes. Please do not ever buy from a breeder who performs "their own exams". This is a dead giveaway that the breeder is hiding something about the puppy's health. A veterinarian provides a well educated, unbiased assessment. Irresponsible breeders are intimidated by veterinarians and prefer to pocket the money that would otherwise go towards the vet's fees.
- We are concerned with your basset's health. We do not breed bassets with known structural defects or undesirable hereditary conditions. We cross a European and Canadian bloodlines with primarily American lines. Our goal is to propagate Basset Hounds with shortness and wrinkles and extremely long ears. What we do not breed for is excessive eye droop (causing entropion) or excessive drooling and skin problems. The excessively abundant wrinkles, sad look, and droopy eyes (attributed to European breeding) may look cute now, but after you pay for several eye surgeries and yeast infections (of the skin and ear) and you]re watching your dog suffering, you will be wishing the breeder had considered these health concerns and not just the appearance. When you look at our breeding dogs you will see HEALTHY, LONG eared, SHORT legged, BRIGHT eyed bassets that meet the AKC standards in all aspects. We do not breed the enormous 100% European bassets, but rather we take the best of European, American, and Canadian bloodlines and combine them to produce 40-60lb basset hounds with heavy bone, long ears, short legs, athleticism, and wonderful disposition. If at any time, a condition arises that affects the health of a basset we've produced, we will happily take the basset back into our care. This is covered in detail in our contract.
- We are always willing to help... We like to email, call, exchange basset pictures... set up basset play dates. We are not in this for profit and it seems we always invest much more money than is ever returned. Reputable breeders know that raising puppies is not a "business" and should never be considered just a form of income. Between providing the very best in vet care and testing, food, supplies, monthly preventatives, emergency c-sections, and the time taken off of work to stay up with puppies for days at a time, we rarely come out ahead financially. We are breeders because we love the breed and we love the time we spend devoted to bettering the breed. Anytime we make basset loving friends in the process we feel very blessed.
- I am committed to getting your puppy to you safe and sound. In the event that you are unable to make the trip to us, I (Amanda) will personally deliver your puppy to its destination, whether I need to drive or fly with your puppy, I will accompany it every step of the way until it is in your arms. I will not commercially ship your puppy. This means NO flying unaccompanied as cargo! Shipping puppies unaccompanied is a irresponsible and selfish.
